Occasionally, two news stories will coincide, juxtapose or collide, providing a fresh perspective on both.
Such was the genesis of Don DeLillo’s great American novel, Underworld (1997). The book’s narrative device and dominant theme came from two triple-deck headlines on the front page of the Oct. 4, 1951 New York Times: Tommy Thompson’s home run, “The shot heard ’round the world,” which lifted the Giants over the Dodgers to win the National League pennant, and revelation of the second Soviet nuclear test blast.
